Ferris Field Notes: The Art of Creative Reinvention Toolkit

$0.00

Ferris Field Notes: Art of Reinvention brings the unparalleled archive of Bill Ferris to life through an immersive audio trailer and downloadable PDF toolkit—designed as gateway materials for educators, cultural organizations, and artists. Ferris’s photography, film, and field recordings documenting Mississippi’s cultural history have been actively reimagined by today’s leading creatives, from Beyoncé and T Bone Burnett to filmmakers such as Ava DuVernay, Questlove, and Martin Scorsese—demonstrating the archive’s enduring relevance as a living source for contemporary storytelling.

More than a toolkit, Art of Reinvention is part of a broader vision to extend Ferris’s life’s work to future generations through interconnected platforms. Alongside this project, Ferris is preparing the release of his memoir and new documentary initiatives drawn from his extensive collection at Yale University. Together, these efforts model how archival materials can fuel creative reuse across music, film, education, and the arts—ensuring that American cultural history continues to inspire new work, new voices, and new ways of seeing.

When I look at Bill’s work, I see aunties I love, grandmothers, cousins… and landscapes that are very familiar to me.

I’ve lived to see a day today when young Black filmmakers like Raven Jackson [and artists like] Jay-Z and Beyoncé are using this work. I love seeing how these materials have become valuable for essentially the grandchildren of the generation in which I worked.
